Yosakoi by Raiden (Performance + Workshop)

Yosakoi (よさこい, meaning Come at Night) is a unique style of Japanese dance that combines traditional Japanese dance movements with modern music. Emerged as a modern rendition of Awa Odari in the 50’s, Yosakoi is a highly energetic dance that requires discipline, strength and willpower.
Founded in 2011, Raiden (雷電, Thunder and Lightning) is the Yosakoi team of Leiden University Japanese Studies students, and is supported by LVSJK-Tanuki. Guided by members who have learned Yosakoi in Japan, our  team performs traditional dances including Soran Bushi (a sea shanty), as well as our own choreography.

Our performance will be followed up by a free workshop of a Sou Odori (総踊り, a general dance). People from all ages participate in such dances in Japan, so don’t be shy and join the fun!
