The Taste of Japanese Whisky Volume 10

Whisky map (C) The Whisky Exchange

Bigger better and only the middle cut!

The 16th Japanese whisky tasting at AnimeCon! The 10th year of doing whisky tastings, the 16th overall tasting (some years we did two of them).

3rd Whisky producing country in the world!

Japan is the 3rd whisky producing country of the world, after Scotland and the USA. Besides some rather, shall we say, undrinkable whisky, Japan produces whisky of high quality and some of those with a different flavour profile than the Scotch one, which is usually drunk in Europe. Most of it is due to difference in climate, wild yeasts and a superior selection of barrels.

This year's focus

This year, we are focusing on the 2nd largest whisky company in Japan, so we will be featuring some blends from Nikka Whisky; four to be exact. We'll be letting you try some of their hard-to-get spring and autumn limited releases from 2017, 2018 and 2019 from Niels's private collection.

We do realize that four bottles of blended whisky make a poor tasting line-up, so we are adding one more blend to the line-up, a 900 bottle limited batch strength blend from Mars, featuring a scene from a manga and their Tsunuki warehouse. Of course, a tasting with just blends is a little bland so we're closing off with 4 single malts! A 3-year old ex-sherry and Imo (Sweet potato) souchu cask Akashi and three stellar malts from Mars! Oh, by the way, yes, you did read that correctly, we're having a 9 shot whisky tasting this year!

This tasting will contain the following whiskies in this order:

  1. Nikka Black Nikka - Deep Blend (2018)
  2. Nikka Black Nikka - Aromatic Blend (2017)
  3. Nikka Black Nikka - Deep Blend Night Cruise (2019)
  4. Nikka Black Nikka - Rich Blend Extra Sherry (2018)
  5. Mars The Red Turtle 2019 Cask strength Blend
  6. Mars Komagatake Single Malt Special Edition 2019
  7. Eigashima Akashi 3yo Imo Souchu Sherry cask 2020
  8. Mars Komagatake Single Malt Double Cellars 2019 edition (5yo)
  9. Mars Komagatake Single Malt Yakushima Ageing 2019 edition (5yo)
