The Taste of Japanese Whisky Volume 9

Whisky map (C) The Whisky Exchange

It's Back!

The 15th Japanese whisky tasting at AnimeCon! The 9th year of doing whisky tastings, the 15th overall tasting (some years we did two of them) and we're looking into something different to add for this year as well. Fingers crossed.

3rd Whisky producing country in the world!

Japan is the 3rd whisky producing country of the world, after Scotland and the USA. Besides some rather, shall we say, undrinkable whisky, Japan produces whisky of high quality and some of those with a different flavour profile than the Scotch one, which is usually drunk in Europe. Most of it is due to difference in climate and use of other type of oak or wine barrels.

This year's focus

This year, we are focusing on the 3rd largest whisky company in Japan, The Kirin Seagram group. We will be trying their Single Malt and Single Grain (World Whisky Award 2017 winner for Best Japanese Grain Whisky) 2017 releases, chosen by their master distiller Jota Tanaka. We also wanted to let you try their bourbon-influenced Fujisanroku. However, this ¥1.200 blend has now risen in price to ¥10.000 a bottle and has the value of a ¥1.000 bottle, so we're skipping that.

We do realize that two bottles of whisky make a poor tasting line-up, so we are trying some additional small distillery releases. We will be tasting two single cask releases of whisky from the Eigashima distillery, trying more from their top malt brand, Akashi. We will be drinking a three-year-old Oloroso sherry cask (50% ABV) and a release of a four-year-old Eigashima red wine cask, aptly named The Aka Head (The red head) bottled at a cracking 61,9% ABV! Since our chairman, Niels, really likes Mars whisky, we're also pouring the Mars Limited Edition 2018 at 46% ABV matured in bourbon and American White Oak barrels. To round it up, we'll be trying two older releases from Chichibu's master distiller, Ichiro Akuto. We're pouring the Double Distilleries, which contains malt from Chichibu and the closed Hanyu distillery, and we're trying an older batch of the Mizunara Wood Reserve.

This tasting will contain the following whiskies in this order:

  1. Mars Komagatake Limited Edition 2018
  2. Akashi Oloroso
  3. Akashi The AKA HEAD
  4. Ichiro's Malt Double Distilleries
  5. Ichiro's Malt Mizunara Wood Reserve
  6. Kirin Master Blender Select 2017 Single Malt
