'In Ghostly Japan': Lafcadio Hearn and stories of the supernatural

April 4 1890. American journalist Lafcadio Hearn, who travelled around the world but never really found a place he felt at home, arrives in Japan. Immediately, he knows that he belongs there. He loves the country, the culture and especially the strange stories that are told. Stories about ghosts with a mission ('yurei'), ancestors long dead and gone but still present, reincarnation, events which took place in former lives but still affect us...

Gerard Jellema will tell some of the finest stories that Hearn collected. In between these stories, he will give some insights in the short life of this remarkable man. A man who to this day is considered one of the most important connections between Japan and the West.
